News Around the House

Just when you think the winter is over, a bit of snow comes to remind you its not over yet! But as your intrepid reporter yawns over her keyboard, the return of daylight savings time is a hopeful sign of the coming Spring! And if you look closely, you can see the braver early spring flowers begin to poke out through the rapidly melting snow.

Some exciting news has crossed this reporter's news desk! Our good friends at Erie Insurance deserve another shout out! This time it is thanks to the wonderful people at ERIE’s African American Affinity Network (EAAN) - that's them in my first photo. They had a supplies drive for us (and if you know the Art House, you know how quickly our enthusiastic student artists can go through art supplies!). They also helped to sponsor art and music in celebration of Juneteenth.

It has been another fun-filled and artistically brilliant week here. Wandering the halls more and more student art graces our walls. And some of the clay projects have been painted and glazed! It is always surprising to students taking a clay class for the first time how many steps go into producing the final project. But most agree the wait is well worth it!

Speaking of the impressive results of hard work and patience, some congratulations are in order for some of our talented kids! The following students got some well-deserved recognition for art submitted to the Women’s Club of Erie’s recent art show. Yandiel Cruz took first place in the grades 3-5 category for his piece titled “Dreamer.” Yeslian Vargas got an honorable mention for her photograph “Restoring.” Anjali Selvam took home third place for her scenic photograph “Pandemic Reality.” Nikita Klesnichenko earned first place for a still-life photograph titled “Overload.” And Teajanae got twice the recognition with an honorable mention for her photograph “My Neighbor,” and second place for her scenic photograph “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” Alas, I do not yet have pictures to show you, but I hope to share these wonderful pieces with you soon!

Looking for something to do this week? Thursday, truly a green day (a hint about the age of the intrepid reporter perhaps…), you can come join us at 10 am to learn how to draw what you see (and see yours truly teach a class!). Saturday brings a workshop meant to get you excited for the coming Spring. Chris Bowler will be leading us all in a day of painting flowerpots, and then planting flowers! I can already smell the fresh soil. Take a look at coming events to register, and to keep up on upcoming events here at the ever-busy house that art (and a wonderful group of art-loving women) built!
