As we hurtle through the tail end of winter, and look forward to the coming of spring, we are keeping busy here at the Inner-City Neighborhood Art House. Classes for our young artistic students have included clay, drawing, papier-mâché, plaster, hoop dancing, ballet, and printing – to name but a few of this dizzying assortment. The students have jumped in with both feet (and occasionally a hoop!), and the finished and nearly finished art projects are piling up on walls and shelves. All this is pretty much what the sophisticated Art House observer has come to expect.
There was also the very exciting visit from Brooklyn-based fabric artist, Amanda Browder. Amanda stopped by to work with the children to create a work of art as tall as the Art House! In fact, after it was finished, Amanda and Art House teacher, Sarah Everett, braved the snow and ice to hang it off the roof! The paint and threads were flying as the children hurried to get the ambitious project done before their rides back home arrived! Finished in the nick of time, the children and their adult helpers were amazed at the result of all their hard work!
But wait! There are some new developments! During the day, and on weekends, the Art House has thrown open its doors to welcome some new and different students. Several times a month the Art House hosts adult students for workshops. Some recent offerings have included a very popular workshop in jewelry making, and just this past week – Inkle weaving. Your intrepid Art House reporter attended both! Probably like yourself, dear reader, your intrepid Art House reporter had no idea what Inkle weaving was. It was great fun, with comradery and artistic instruction for all! There is also an exercise class for adults. In March there will be a class on the 17th on still-life drawing – where there will likely be a shamrock or two appearing! Two days later there will be a Saturday class celebrating SPRING (though some imagination may be needed to get the chilly but hopeful artist in the Spring mood). Shake off the end-of-winter blahs, and look forward to greener days, with a day of painting and planting! Before catching our breath for what April has to offer, the Art House ends the month on the 24th with a workshop on relief printmaking.
To keep you up on all these happenings, this intrepid reporter will return once a week on Fridays (unless something truly exciting happens on another day, of course!). Check back often to learn all that’s happening here at the Inner-City Neighborhood Art House!
